Rick grew up in a working class family, a Union household. His dad was a working-man and as a strong Union man he rose in the ranks of the Painters Union (IUPAT) in the Cincinnati and surrounding area. Rick's dad held a position with Local 50, Painters and then District 12, which at the time covered the greater part of Southern Ohio, and Northern Kentucky.

Before graduating from college, Rick worked at numerous blue collar jobs, but because of the opportunity afforded by his dad's Union job, he was able to graduate from the University of Cincinnati with a B.A. degree in Economics and later with a Masters of Arts in Industrial Relations.

Rick worked as a Field Examiner for the National Labor Relations Board beginning in 1980 and continued attended Chase Law School at NKU on the side. After becoming an attorney, Rick successfully litigated many unfair labor practice cases throughout the Ohio and Kentucky regions. Rick was able to obtain reinstatement for many Union supporters who were illegally terminated for exercising their Section 7 rights.

Rick retired from the NLRB in 2014. After retirement he became an associate attorney with Kircher, Suetholz and Associates, joined BS&J in 2018, and now directly advocates for Unions in Ohio, Kentucky and Southern Indiana. Rick's expertise with the NLRB is a great asset to the Firm and the Union's we serve. Rick is currently based in the Firm's Cincinnati office but works in all geographical locations of the Firm's clients.
